A Ranking of the Hex Girls
Welcome back to the mythology, and today, we'll be ranking everyone's favorite eco-goth band, the Hex Girls. I will rank their appearances based on their look, how they were used, and their portrayal in the story. Now, I will only rank their appearances on the shows; I can't speak for comics or secondary media. With that said, let's begin.
6 - Scooby-Doo Guess Who
Look, I tried, but it's awful, and what's even more frustrating is that the idea isn't dead on arrival. Parodying the Hex Girls could work, but like Teen Titans Go, it makes already bad jokes that aren't in character with them. Like Thorn has a tranquilizer...um okay. It's not only unfunny, but it's not in character for Thorn. That would work after her personality change in the episode, but she hasn't shifted at that point.
Some of the jokes work like when Thorn makes a passing comment on how Daphne works for free and the bit with the mailman, but no, this is bad moving on!
5 - What's New Scooby-Doo Petrified Bride
Now, the issue I take here is that nothing goes anywhere. I like the bride's outfits. The song is great, but the plotline of Dusk breaking up with the band is only mentioned once by Daphne, and the Hex Girls have one fight. That's super lame guys.
But with that said, the characters are... well in character. Bonus points for when Thorn calls the Vampire guy cute. Sorry, I just find that funny. I don't know why.
4. Legend of the Vampire
Continuing the vampire theme, Legend of the Vampire was their second appearance. Now, the animation is of much lower quality since Witch's Ghost, so the Hex Girls look a lot cheaper, and that's ignoring the fact they whitewashed Luna...twice.
Plus, the Hex Girls get the Princess Peach treatment when the Yowie Yahoo captures them. Thankfully, we get a cool ending where they sing the original Scooby-Doo theme.
So overall, this was an okay comeback, but not much else.
3. Dance of the Dead
Now, for me, the issue is that they come out of nowhere in the episode. Like it's a dancing zombie army and then, Hex Girls.
I'll give some positives as the war paint is great. I love the Death Day vibes to it. Though I found their lines kind of out of character. Like when Dusk is all excited about the war paint, did you forget she's the grumpy one?
While I like the Scott Pilgrim magic band battle, when could they do that? In fact, the whole point of Witch's Ghost was that they had no supernatural agenda.
Still, it was a good showcase, and they further the story ark of Mystery Incorporated. I'll leave it at that.
2. Fear of the Phantom
Now I know a lot of fans didn't take kindly to these new outfits, which they even made fun of in Dance of the Dead when Thorn outright says fans preferred their classic costumes, but I like these looks. I only personally have two grips.
One, Thorn, and Luna have a Victorian Vampire getup while Dusk is a steampunk goth; it's inconsistent, and it annoys me. Another is the color. Thorns outfit can get away with black, white, and red. But I felt like Luna and Dusk should've kept the green and purple for their new looks. Little changes can make all the difference.
With that said, their role is to temp Daphne to leave Mystery Inc., which was very well implemented. Also, I like that they didn't make the Hex Girls actively malice; it's all Daphne's choice.
Though, after Thorn told Daphne about that guy she met, I need more information. I'm curious. Lastly, I like the Trap of Love; it's a banger.
1. Witches Ghost
Yes, big shock, their first appearance is still the best. I'm sorry, I don't believe in contrarianism for the sake of contrarianism. Not only is their idea alone terrific, but their introduction when they first meet Shaggy and Scooby-Doo is great with the shadow and the colors. Plus, the songs just in Witch's Ghost alone are instantly iconic.
Secondly, they work as a red herring for Mystery Inc. When the group thinks they're evil Witches but their just goth and Thorns Wiccan, Also, sadly, this is the best Wiccan representation I've seen. Even though it's a little weird, they imply the idea that Wiccan is a bloodline when it is a belief.
So, what are your favorite appearances of the Eco-goth girl band from Oakhaven? Let me know. I'd be interested to know your opinion. And as always, bye and be respectful to the mythology.
